Our History
In the 1820's, a small church was built in Heuvelton. It was a Congregational Church until April 5, 1859, when the members voted to change to the Presbyterian denomination. On December 30, 1875, the Presbyterians of Heuvelton dedicated a new church edifice to the worship of Almighty God. The First Presbyterian Church of Heuvelton celebrated its centennial in 1975.
The history of our church really began in 1842 when a dynamic evangelist, the Rev. Lewis Alfred Wickes, came to preach in Heuvelton for a short time. He also preached in Massena, Gouverneur and Ogdensburg, and is no doubt responsible for the growth of churches in this area of the North Country. More recently, our pulpit has been served by Rev. J. Richard Lauterbach (1970-1985); Rev. Scott Barton (1985-1986); Rev. William Doyle (1989-1991); Rev. Herbert Tennies (1993-1999); Rev. Samuel Shinn (1999-2001); Rev. Karl Warrington (2001-2006); and Rev. Laura McKnight (2007-2010). Rev. Robert Schirmer has been serving our church on a part time basis since November 2010. For the past seven years, Rob has been working full time for Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley as “Spiritual Care Coordinator”. His previous work has included teaching at an Alternative School and at a Community Christian Academy where he worked with special needs students. Rob spent two years in Lusaka, Zambia as an Instructor/Pastor of the Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia. Before his mission to Zambia, Rob was Pastor at three churches in Wisconsin. Rob obtained Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois and Master of Divinity from Nashotah House Seminary in Nashotah, Wisconsin. Rev. Schirmer’s religious background and education was founded in the Episcopalian Church but his faith led him to the Continuing Anglican Church. Rob has a broad experience background, a profound knowledge of the Bible, and a dedication to delivering meaningful, Scripture based sermons. |
We at Heuvelton FPC are a welcoming congregation, involved in our community through the local food pantry and MINC (Ministries in the North Country). Our pastor is a member of the Heuvelton Ministerial Association, and we work with other local churches in ecumenical efforts -- worship and mission projects. Come and join us!
